The
region’s third largest city located at the junction of the Amazon and Tapajós
rives. The waters of the Tapajós are among the clearest in the
Amazon, and the river is the site of dozens of white, sandy beaches nestled
between the water and forest.
Santarém is exactly halfway between Belém and Manaus and may be reached by river ( 459 miles and 3-4 days from Belém ) or by plane ( a one-hour flight ). It is one of the best fishing spots in the region, especially for “tucunaré”, the prized river fish with the yellow spot on its tail. Like other cities in the Amazon, Santarém provides na amazing natural landscape. Brightly feathered birds and colorful butterflies share the skies with gigantic moths that flutter around the lights of the boats docked along the river. |
