RIO006F - CITY TOUR
H/D
The best way to get to know the city is to
take a panoramic city tour. Rio de Janeiro is
without doubt the most photogenic city in the
world and throughout the tour there
are plenty of opportunities
to take photographs. The tour passes the
beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, where
the locals spend a great deal of their leisure time. Girls in mini bikinis
are very much a part of the scenery,
as are the groups of athletes playing
volleyball and soccer on the white sands. The
tour continues on to Flamengo Park
with its gardens and monuments, through Botafogo and pass
the harbor, with its spectacular view of Sugar Loaf
and Corcovado, the
residential district of Flamengo,
the Second World War Monument, the
Museum of Modern Art, and then heads for the downtown district. Here
we stop at the 20 story ultra-modern
Metropolitan Cathedral with its four magnificent floor-to-ceiling
stained glass windows. From here we travel to
on the "Sambodromo", where the
world famous Carnival Parades take place,
further past the Opera House and then on to
"Quinta da Boa Vista" Park. Leaving the park, we
continue on to Maracana Stadium with its capacity
for 200,000 spectators, en route to the Rebouças Tunnel. We
drive straight through and emerge at Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon. By now we
are near our hotel and the end of the tour. Our guides, throughout the
tour, will have given an in depth commentary to your clients on Rio
life and the sights, making this an interesting and memorable day.

- TYPICAL FEIJOADA LUNCH FOR HALF DAY TOURS
Originally from Colonial Brazil, the
"feijoada" was a meal prepared by
the slaves, who used leftovers of pork
and beef "donated" by their masters
to ensure a more consistent nutrition. Today
the "feijoada" has become more elaborate,
from the selection of ingredients to the special
seasoning, and it is considered Rio's most famous
dish (and maybe Brazil's!). The
traditional Saturday luncheons became the perfect occasion to
meet with friends around boiling pots, with
plenty of "caipirinhas" (a favorite drink
for Brazilians). The lunch can start with a charming
"Baiana" hosting customers with a welcome cup of beans sauce
or tropical fruit "batidas". The buffet includes around 15
types of meats separated pot by pot, rice, slices of orange,
"farofa" (fried manioc flour), different types
of pepper and Minas-style collard greens. For dessert
a wide selection of Brazilian mouthwatering
sweets and pastries.

Leave hotel in jeeps to
visit the biggest slum
in South America. With approximately
160.000 inhabitants, and 722.500m2, the "Favela
da Rocinha" provides the visitors, from its upper side,
with a magnificent panoramic view of the town. Our
excursion through "Rocinha's"
narrow-streets shows the most interesting point of
the community and its amazing social contrasts.
Stops will be made at the local sports-center,
"Boiadeiro" Square, Commercial Center, the local
free-market, at "Academicos da Rocinha" (local samba
school, where we will have the opportunity of seeing the costumes for
the next Carnival parade being prepared), local
association and the Educational-center. At last,
a the local Kinder-Garden (Where donations are very welcomed!).
Everywhere inside "Rocinha" is
accessible through its narrow
streets, so we will
have the opportunity to observe local people walking
back-and-forth. On our way back to hotel, a last stop is made at
"Pepino" beach, in San Conrado, where
you can enjoy a delicious coconut-water, while
watching hang-gliding flies. Duration: 2, 1/2 hours. Daily
departures: Morning and afternoon.

- JEEP TOUR - TIJUCA NAT. FOREST & FAVELA
Leave the hotel in jeeps; drive till the entrance of Tijuca
National Park, where a radical change of scenery
creates an immediate impact on the
visitor. The sound and smells are
so intoxicating that one is not
sure whether one is dreaming or not. A
10 minutes stop is made at
"Cachoeira dos Macacos" (Waterfalls of
monkeys). Here bathing in a pool of natural spring
water can be enjoyed. The tour continues on to the "Vista
Chinesa" (Chinese View) where an another stop
is made with the opportunity to
take some photographs of this particularly beautiful landscaped part
of the forest. On board the jeep again and a little further
on where an additional stop is
made, and the tour continues on foot through specially cleared
pathways until reaching the "Toca da Onca" (Den of the
Jaguar) Cave. It is hard to believe or understand that a primitive forest
can still exist in a city with more than ten million
inhabitants. The sounds, animals, flowers and butterflies
will transport one to a world of dreams and fantasy. There is a small
waterfall where one can take a refreshing
shower. After a brief rest, return to the jeep and continue on to the
"Cascatinha" Waterfalls where it is time for
refreshments. From this point the
second part of the tour starts,
which consists of a visit to the biggest slum
in South America. With approximately 160.000 inhabitants,
and 722.500 m2, the "Favela da Rocinha", from
its upper side, provides the visitors with a
magnificent panoramic view of the town. The excursion through
"Rocinha" narrow-streets shows the most interesting
point of the community and its amazing social contrasts. Stops will
be made at the local sports-center, "Boiadeiro" Square,

Rocinha" (local samba school, where there is an opportunity of
seeing the costumes for the next
Carnival parade being
prepared), local association and the
Educational-center. At last, the local Kinder-Garden (Where donations are
very welcomed!). This tour is a good opportunity to
observe the locals walking back-and-forth in their daily doings,
through the narrow streets of the Favela. Finally, on the way back to
the hotel, a last stop is made at "Pepino" beach, in San
Conrado, where a delicious coconut-water served in the coconut
can be enjoyed, while watching the hang-gliders. Duration: 5 hours.

- RENAISSANCE EVENING W/SPINET CONCERT & DINNER
FROM THE DIARY OF A TOURIST
Saint Peter of Guaratiba, is the home and concert venue of the famous
Brazilian harpsichordist, Roberto di Regina. His instrument, which he
constructed himself, is a copy of a
magnificent (Ruckers) of the eighteenth century.
After a fifty minute car trip from Rio,
driving south through forested
mountains and evergreen plains, we arrived at Saint Peter and
were ceremonially received in a courtyard of a fairytale castle which
is, in fact, a barn and serves as a meeting point. Drinks
were served. We were waited upon with the elegance and delicacy of
another age, attendants dressed in antique
costume. Dozens of torches flared in their sconces as the
daylight faded and the flames were reflected in the waters of the
lake. Winding now through the fiery flickering, we
passed over a romantic bridge and finally into the Capela
Magdalena. No one was prepared for the riot of color
therein. The little shine is a blaze
of medieval frescoes - prophets, saints, angles and
Christ in majesty, and there under a
series of panels depicting the life of the
Virgin, the splendid harpsi chord glitters in
a nimbus of candlelight. The guests take their seats and the
maestro bends over his instrument. Away we went over the pathways, of an age
long dead, now vivid again with a mysterious
tenderness. An excellent dinner rounded
off this incomparable entertainment, enlivened
with quality wines.
Opinion was unanimous - it was the loveliest and most remarkable
night of our sojourn in this country wrought of surprises,
contrasts and contradictions.
