RIO030A - RENAISSANCE EVENING W/SPINET CONCERT & DINNER
FROM THE DIARY OF A TOURIST
Saint Peter of Guaratiba, is the home and concert venue of the famous Brazilian harpsichordist, Roberto di Regina. His instrument, which he constructed himself, is   a   copy  of  a  magnificent   (Ruckers) of  the eighteenth  century.  After a fifty minute  car  trip   from   Rio,    driving  south   through   forested   mountains   and evergreen plains, we arrived at  Saint Peter and were ceremonially received in a courtyard of a fairytale castle  which is,  in fact,  a barn  and serves as a meeting point. Drinks were served. We were waited upon with the elegance and delicacy of  another  age,  attendants  dressed  in  antique costume.   Dozens  of  torches flared in their sconces as the daylight faded and the flames  were reflected in the waters of the lake. Winding  now  through  the fiery flickering,  we  passed over a romantic bridge and finally  into the  Capela Magdalena.  No one  was  prepared for the riot of color therein.   The  little  shine  is  a  blaze  of  medieval  frescoes - prophets, saints,  angles  and  Christ  in  majesty,  and  there  under  a  series  of panels depicting  the  life  of  the Virgin,  the  splendid  harpsi chord glitters  in  a nimbus of candlelight.  The guests take their seats  and the  maestro bends over his instrument. Away we went over the pathways, of an age long dead, now vivid again   with  a  mysterious  tenderness.    An  excellent   dinner  rounded  off  this incomparable   entertainment,   enlivened   with   quality   wines.     Opinion   was unanimous - it was the loveliest and most remarkable night of our sojourn  in  this country wrought of surprises, contrasts and contradictions.
