Natal is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, located 114 miles north of João Pessoa. It is a city of extraordinary beaches, dotted with tiny fishing villages.  The most sought-after beaches are Genipabu and Cotovelo. There are also delightful fresh-water beaches along the Potengi river and its falls.

Reis Magos Fort, the birthplace of the city, is definitely worth a visit.  On one side, strong waves crash against the rock on which the fort is built. On the other side, the beach and reefs form a giant, natural aquarium.
