CGR013A - CATTLE DRIVE 5D/4N

Day 01 - Transfer to Caiman Refuge. Transfer on open lorry to Baiazinha, a six-room lodge built on stilts over a lake of clear waters. The distance from the main lodge is 9 Km, and the drive takes about 30 minutes. A snack will be available upon arrival, and there is still time left for a short horseback ride on the surroundings, to familiarize guests with the environment and the horses. Dinner at Baiazinha, followed by a slide presentation on which the guests will be provided with information regarding Pantanal's ecosystem, culture, and description of the program and procedures for next days. They will receive the "Comitiva Kit", containing all the basic items needed for the Cattle Drive.

Day 02 - Wake up call at 5:30 am, breakfast at 6:00 am. At 6:30 am, the group will meet with the cowboys, choose horses and ride for about 30 minutes, reaching the area where the heard of cattle is enclosed. From there on, the cattle drive begins. At approximately 11:00 am, guests will reach a pre-established site - a patch of shaded forest – where lunch is prepared. Time to rest and eat regional food, at the sound of local music played live. A Short break for siesta, recovering energy for another 3-hour ride to Retiro Santa Voia. Upon arrival at this day's destiny, cattle must be enclosed to spend the night, being picked up again next morning. Arrival at campsite will be at 4:30 pm. Santa Voia is a section of the ranch formerly used by cowboys during cattle drives. At this campsite (a wooden shed covered by palm tree leaves and surrounded by mosquito nets), guests will experience a typical "pantaneiro" barbecue, after which the most tireless can still dance to the rhythm of local tunes, or simply lean back on the chair and watch the stars. The beds for this night will be hammocks, set up in the shed and protected by individual mosquito nets.

Day 03 - Wake up at 5:00 am. After breakfast, it is time to get back on the horse, gather cattle at the enclosure point and follow on. This second day of the drive is shorter, so the cattle will be delivered at its destiny by lunch time. After delivering cattle at the Retiro Novo (another of the farm's section, located in the north),it is time to celebrate

the success of the mission! Awaiting the group, there will be another barbecue being served at Retiro Novo, where one can take a time and rest from the long rides. To help recovering energies and re-hydrating, one can always rely on the "terere", a local beverage prepared with Mate tea mixed with cold water and lime, served in a cup made out of a cow's horn. Return to Baiazinha on the open lorry, crossing the entire ranch from north to south, with the possibility of seeing some of Pantanal's abundant wildlife and beautiful landscapes. After arrival at Baiazinha, there is time for a well deserved shower and a very tranquil boat ride at the lake, watching birds fly back to their rookeries while an outstanding sunset takes place. The ideal alternative for relaxing after so much riding... Dinner at Baiazinha. After dinner, there will be a spotlighting tour in search for nocturnal wildlife such as Giant Anteaters, Crab-eating Foxes, Capybaras, Pootoos and Night Jars.

Day 04 - Wake up call at 6:00 am. This morning's activity is a hike on the Angico Sujo trail, a forest inhabited by various birds and mammals such as Howler and Capuchin Monkeys, South American Coatis and others. Return to Baiazinha for lunch. In the afternoon, guests will be driven to the Main Lodge on the lorry, for another boat ride at a different lake, followed by an activity of feeding the wild caimans (species of alligator). This is a tradition which started at Caiman Ranch Many years ago, long before any of the lodges were built. Nowadays it is a special attraction, where you have the chance of getting very close to these amazing and harmless reptiles. Return to Baiazinha for dinner, followed by a video presentation about Pantanal.

Day 05 - We leave this morning free for those who prefer to pack up calmly. For the most enthusiastic, there is still time for a farewell activity like another short hike or horseback ride. By 10:30 am there will be a light meal served at Baiazinha, after which the group will go to the Main Lodge for check out and transfer to Campo Grande Airport.
