This tour also includes a visit to the small mining town Mariana, 10 Km. from  Ouro  Preto. Visit to  the  gold  mine  and  slave  market.  Mariana  was  the first  village and  city of Minas Gerais.  It  has  been  the  seat  of  the  Archbishopric  for  many  years. Its streets are ornate with fountains, the Stations  of  the Cross,  and  mansions  are plentiful. The town is  well  provided  with  shops.  Visit  to  a  gold  mine,  located between Ouro Preto and Mariana. During 1729 many land grants were awarded for the exploration of gold. In 1859 the Anglo Brazilian gold company bought  the rights of exploration for 50 years.   Today,  part  of  this  mine  can  be  visited  by going through its tunnels that follow the gold veins. The tools of that era that were used for mining, can still be seen.  Probably  the  only  gold mine in the world that can be visited by  women  and  priests!   According  to  old  mining  superstition, anybody  in  skirts  inside a mine,  brings  bad  luck,  and  hence  not    permitted entrance.

DAY 3, GOV. VALADARES/OURO PRETO.     Early  departure  to  Ouro  Preto. Visit  to  "open pit mine"  of  Imperial Topaz.    Dinner & overnight in Ouro Preto. 

DAY 4, OURO PRETO. Visits to historically interesting buildings,  churches  and the  Mineralogy  Museum.    Return  to  Confins  airport  (BHZ)  in  the  afternoon.
