- CITY TOUR - HISTORICAL OR PANORAMIC 4HRS.
HISTORICAL CITY TOUR (Upper city). We start in the modern suburbs
of Barra at the mouth of the Bay with it's famous lighthouse
and make our way, slowly by car or coach to the old
historical section of town, the "Pelourinho area", with
the largest and best
preserved complex of colonial architecture
in the America's. We stroll through the narrow, bustling
streets with buildings in pastel shades of an age gone
by, soaking-in, the sights and sounds of this vibrant city.
We visit the Church of "Sao Francisco", with it's gold-leafed
Baroque interior and the "Pelourinho" Square, the
heart of the old town. We return to our vehicle and then to
the hotel by an alternative route. This tour shows two distinct
aspects of Salvador, the new and the old, concentrating
on the early expansion of the city and is a very
good orientation for those wishing to further explore the
city.
PANORAMIC CITY TOUR (Lower city). The lower city tour takes us
to the quite waters of the "Itapagipe" Peninsula, where
the first holiday
residences were built. Now a peaceful family
district, life moves at slower pace than the busting upper
city. Fishermen fish from dug-out canoes, locals collect
shell fish at low tides, schooners are at anchor, all
protected by the famous "Bonfim" Church, one of the most
important churches of pilgrimage in Brazil, which has a deep syncretism
with the "Candomblé". We continue to the "Monserrat"
with it's panoramic view of the city and on to the
"Mercado Modelo", a thriving market for local artifacts.
It's time to bargain!
Please take notice that the "Bonfim" Church
is closed on Mondays. Dur: 4 hrs AM and PM departures.

- AFRICAN ORIENTED CITY TOUR H/D
In
this excursion, we will trace the African
roots of Salvador
on a city tour which combines the newer, modern
section
and the older Historical Center of this city, the "Pelourinho"
area, so called after the pillory which stood in
the main square, in front of the central slave market. This area
is now a symbol of the Afro Movement in Bahia and the home
of many places of interest to those wishing to trace this
underlying African influence. We visit the
"Afro-Brazilian
Museum" which traces the West African origins of the
city and see the superb wooden sculpted panels of the "Orixa's"
by Salvador most celebrated artist, "Caribe". We also
visit the "Sociedade Protectora dos Desvalidos"
(the Protective Society for the Destitute), founded in 1832, 56
years
before the eventual abolition of slavery. Originally a fraternity
of ex-slaves who helped others to freedom, the Society
still works in the community to this day. We visit the
"Church of Our Lady of the Rosary", the
famous Black church,
built with meager resources over a period of almost 100
years. The "Casa do Benin" (Benin House) nearby further
investigates
this permeating African influence. We look in on
artists and sculptors at work and let the senses do the
rest
as we soak up the feel of this vibrant
city. The buildings
may be European, but the rest is African. Please take
notice that the Afro-Brazilian Museum and
"Casa do Benin"
are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Duration:
04 hours.
